Understanding the Nutritional Therapy Journey

Updated: Nov 11

I want you to first imagine yourself as this majestic tree, the roots are your genetics, your environment, your diet and lifestyle and they manifest into the branches, which are your symptoms, as well as how you look and feel. How tall are you standing? How do your branches and leaves look? I love this analogy as it really illustrates the multitude of factors that influence our health and wellbeing.

As a Nutritional Therapist, I focus on supporting you to nourish those roots to promote holistic well-being, so you can feel and look your best.

A tree with big roots

In today's world, the importance of holistic health approaches is gaining momentum as more individuals seek to optimise their well-being through natural and personalised methods.

Most people understand, at least conceptually, that they should eat better, move more, and take time for themselves to live a long and happy life. However, life often gets in the way of achieving that. Many juggle jobs and the complexities of modern relationships, leaving little time to dedicate to being healthy. Convenience often wins, but this can lead to silent health issues like IBS, PMT, arthritis, stress, anxiety, and weight gain.

The Importance of Food

The food you eat matters more than you can imagine. By making changes to your diet, the symptoms of many conditions can be improved significantly, leading to a profound shift in how you experience life. This is how I discovered Nutritional Therapy and after having qualified, I now focus on using food as a tool for health and healing.

What is Nutritional Therapy?

Nutritional therapy, once dismissed as 'alternative medicine,' is now gaining recognition. As a Nutritional therapist, I apply the latest research in nutrition and health sciences to create personalised diet, lifestyle, and supplement plans. We might even explore functional testing to help understand where the imbalances might be. I also provide coaching to help you put these changes into practice effectively and / or breakthrough barriers that might have been holding you back.

Personal Service

Nutritional therapy is a very personal approach. I consider your unique biochemical makeup, medical history, current symptoms, and personal preferences to create a plan tailored just for you. This personalised approach takes time and skill, and may also involve targeted supplements.

Why Doesn't Everyone See a Nutritionist?

Many people don't understand the significant impact a personalised food and lifestyle programme can have on their symptoms and overall life experience. The media often provides soundbites about the latest foods, but they don't connect the dots. Most doctors have limited knowledge of nutrition and often resort to prescriptions rather than addressing the root causes of health issues.

As a Nutritional Therapist, I consider you as a framework of systems, using the 'Functional Medicine' approach and that your symptoms are a result of imbalances. Rather than treat the symptom, we try to understand the root of the problem and where that imbalance might be coming from and this might be where testing can be really supportive.

What Happens in a Nutrition Consultation?

Your first consultation will last up to 90 minutes. I will ask you to complete and send back a detailed nutritional therapy questionnaire before your visit. During the session your medical history, health goals, challenges, lifestyle and dietary preferences will be discussed. I am here to listen to your story and anything you share with me is kept in confidence.

I will explore your digestion, I might even pull out the Bristol Stool Chart and ask you to identify your poo! I'll look into what you eat, how you sleep, your hormones, your mood, how you feel, how happy you are with your life, your work, where you live, your day to day routine, your symptoms, your childhood, and more. Often clients don't realise the depth of work we do and what we explore but we are a myriad of systems.

I usually offer Nutritional Therapy sessions as 3-month programmes, as this allows you the time to implement the changes at a pace that suits you and to address any challenges or questions that arise. It also factors in any functional testing we might need and it allows me to tweak the programme as we progress.

I do also offer ad hoc and one off sessions, because I am here to support you for what you need. You can find more information on my prices and programmes using this link.

Staying Motivated

Knowing what to do is only part of the problem. Staying motivated is the hardest part of any plan. Having a buddy or coach to keep you accountable can make the difference between reaching your goal and staying there. That's why I use health coaching to ensure that all your hard work doesn't go to waste.
